“Fall 2026 Books Preview: 41 of the Seasons Top Reads”
By Christina Ianzito
August 21, 2026
“How refreshing: an anthology of fictional stories about people in their 60s and beyond. This collection was compiled by New Jersey couple David Galef, 67, an author and writing professor, and editor Beth Weinhouse, 69, as a follow-up to their 2006 collection, 20 Over 40. They scoured journals and solicited writers before selecting their favorites, resulting in a wide range of tales from writers like Joyce Carol Oates, Paul Theroux (see his new book on Canada, below) and the late Jane Gardam. One, “Naughty” by Eileen Pollack, features a woman who’s nonplussed to learn that the man she met online prefers kinky sex. Weinhouse tells AARP that their goal was to “upend the idea of what older protagonists in a story should be.”

Dating, sex, bad marriages and even stealing pepper mills. Life after 60 is hardly boring as portrayed in the short story anthology “20 Over 60”.In a counterpoint to today’s media obsession with longevity and youth, the collection offers lively snapshots of later life from literary heavy hitters, such as Paul Theroux and Joyce Carol Oates, and lesser known writers, like Rebecca Keller and Eileen Pollack.

“These Short Stories Prove Life after 60 is Wild”
By Don Noble
September 29, 2026
These oldsters are my people. The 20 stories are of course, varied, but some subjects inevitably prevail: retirement challenges, illness in spite of fidelity to organic vegetables and lots of jogging, loneliness, death, nursing homes, balance problems and broken hips, downsizing and clearing out the house, the difficulties of the inverted power dynamics when the children think they know best. But some are very funny anyway.
